An honest answer — it depends on three things · September 2026
There is no single cheapest option, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. It turns on three things: how heavy the shipment is, how fast you need it, and whether a minimum weight is working against you.
We are a cargo company, so the honest version of this page costs us a little business. For very small urgent parcels a courier beats us, and we will say so. For most of what people send from Nigeria, it does not.
Documents and anything under about 2 kg
Usually cheapest: A courier, usually DHL
Consolidators price per kilogram and most enforce a minimum, so a very light parcel ends up paying for weight it does not use. A courier prices the package.
Watch out: This is the one case where we will tell you to go elsewhere.
Roughly 2–10 kg
Usually cheapest: It genuinely depends
This is the band where a consolidator minimum decides it. If the minimum is 10 kg and you are sending 6 kg, you pay for 10 kg — which can wipe out the saving against a courier.
Watch out: Ask for the price of your actual shipment, not the per-kg rate.
Roughly 10–50 kg
Usually cheapest: Consolidated air cargo
The band consolidation is built for. Market rates of around ₦6,800–10,000 per kilogram against ₦13,000–36,000 for couriers, and the minimum is no longer working against you.
50–100 kg
Usually cheapest: Consolidated air cargo, or sea if you can wait
Air stays convenient and the per-kilogram rate keeps falling. Sea becomes worth pricing once you are near a sea minimum.
Over 100 kg, or a full relocation
Usually cheapest: Sea cargo
Sea was running at roughly £1.50–2.50 per kilogram against £3.60–5.30 for air, with minimums around 100 kg. The saving is large and so is the wait.
Watch out: Groupage sea to the UK typically runs 4–6 weeks port to port, and 6–8 weeks door to door.
Comparing per-kilogram rates is how most people shop for cargo, and it is why most people end up paying more than they expected. These are the five things that move the final number:
The minimum weight
A 10 kg minimum means a 6 kg parcel is charged as 10 kg. That is a 67% increase on the price you were quoted per kilogram, and it is the most common reason a "cheap" rate is not.
Collection from your address
Published per-kilogram rates usually assume you drop off. Home or office pickup is extra, and in Lagos it varies with where you are.
Delivery to the UK doorstep
Some quotes end at a UK depot, not at your recipient. Compare like with like — door to door against door to door.
UK customs charges
Duty and VAT are outside any shipper's control and are charged on arrival. Anyone including them in a headline price is guessing.
Volumetric weight
Light but bulky cargo is charged on the space it occupies rather than what it weighs. A large box of clothing can be priced well above its actual weight.
Two companies quote you. One charges ₦7,000 per kilogram with a 10kg minimum. The other charges ₦9,000 per kilogram with no minimum. You are sending 6kg.
| Quote | Charged as | You pay | Real rate per kg |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₦7,000/kg, 10kg minimum | 10 kg | ₦70,000 | ₦11,667 |
| ₦9,000/kg, no minimum | 6 kg | ₦54,000 | ₦9,000 |
The higher headline rate is the cheaper shipment, by ₦16,000. This is why we ask what you are sending before quoting a rate.
In September 2026 sea was running at roughly £1.5–2.5 per kilogram and air at about £3.6–5.3. Sea is less than half the price. It is also 6–8 weeks door to door, against days for air, and it usually needs around 100kg before it makes sense at all.
So sea wins for a relocation, a household consignment or commercial stock. It loses for a food parcel, because nobody wants dried fish arriving two months later.
Our published table is being finalised. Send us your item list and we will price your actual shipment rather than quoting you a rate that may not apply to it.
Comparison figures are from a September 2026 review of published and quoted rates on this route, converted at the CBN rate of ₦1,786 to the pound. Rates and exchange rates both move — treat these as a guide, not a quotation.
